Self portrait of Robert Elrod

This week’s indy artist creature feature is Robert Elrod. To the left you can see a self portrait painted by the artist. So who is this hot shot of horror, this draftsman of the undead? Robert, or Snuggles as he likes to be called by his friends, is a self taught artist living in beautiful Colorado. He works from home as both a graphic designer and horror artist. When he can he works on his own project, Tickling a Dead Man.

As mentioned in the last artist feature, i have road tripped with Robert and have worked at  a few of the same conventions with him. Robert is unafraid to sling his ink down at a convention for all to see nor is he afraid to wear it. You will often see Robert wearing shirts of his own creations as he has his own screen press.

Alas, ladies you are out of luck though. That hunk you see behind the table at the conventions is spoken for but you can still ask to see his Man-Thing.

So…what is Tickling a Dead Man?

It sounds like a game morbid teenagers play as a dare. “Poke it..see if he’s still dead..I DOUBLE DOG DARE YA!” When i asked Robert to describe what it is this is what he said.

Robert: “Well, it started as a single story to poke fun at myself, (probably because no one else dares too). He went on to say, “As a kid i got creeped out by the dark basement and now i am using George, the main character of the comic, as my outlet and personal vehicle. I put George through all kinds of horrible trials.

MattCampbellArt: So why the name Tickling a Dead Man?

Tickling a Dead Man by Robert Elrod

Robert: ” Well the analogy of being the Dead man comes from George not really living his life because he is afraid to go out and do anything. So i am constantly tickling him with trials that force him to face those fears.

Robert has put together two minis series and collected them into Vol.1 you can pick it up for only $3.99 here Go ahead, i’ll wait…………….

Back now? Good because you should know that Robert is starting on his 3rd mini for Tickling a Dead Man and he says that now he’s really diving into the character and things are going to get tougher for poor George.

So i asked Robert with all the available genre out there, why horror? He responded, ” Well for one i don’t like to draw technical stuff like buildings, cars and all the other stuff. I’m more into drawing organic things. Also, i like drawing horror because it becomes sort of a face your fears things but in a safe environment..

Well you can go check out more of Robert’s awesome creature and horror art on his website http://www.robertelrodllc.com
